[Update: This article had been edited to include quotes and an explanation from Bruce Fenton, they can be found near the end of the piece.]

When fourteen year old and aspiring engineer Ahmed Mohamed showed the digital clock he created to a teacher, he didn’t expect to find himself in handcuffs, but that is where he found himself when the school decided to call the police and where the entire internet found him, when someone decided to post a picture of the ordeal online.

The picture gave rise to a surge of outrage on the internet, which was followed by a more inspiring outpouring of support. Everyone from President Obama to Mark Zuckerberg has expressed their support, and now you can add the a major Bitcoin figure to the list. Bitcoin Foundation Executive Director Bruce Fenton, has spoken out in support of Mohamed and is putting his bits where his mouth is, offering up a $50,000 scholarship that may increase to $250,000.Bruce Fenton Post 1

It seems that some people might not have been taking him seriously, so he reiterated that he meant what he was saying.

Later, Fenton increased the amount significantly. Presumably, he received word that other people would like to help, as the jump from $50,000 to $250,000 is quite large and likely wasn’t done on a whim.

We asked Fenton for comment and he provided this quote, giving some insight into his decision to first make the offer, and then to increase it so substantially.

“I think that the national interest in this story makes it a great opportunity to get people to think about anti-Muslim bigotry and what we’ve become as a nation. This should be a wake up call for many Americans to realize something is very wrong when we are arresting 14 year olds with a NASA shirt for building a clock.

I really do feel the [Texas] public school doesn’t deserve him as a student and thought it would be awkward for him to return. Then, I realized he doesn’t even have to return if he doesn’t want to and there was a simple offer I could make to help. Once it became clear many others felt the same way I increased the offer. I hope his family hears about it and considers it and I especially hope that this incident makes people think about what kind of country we are and can be.”

Fenton also indicated that he attended Wilbraham Monson during his childhood.

Wilbraham Monson is a prep school in Massachusetts. No word yet on if Mohamed will accept Fenton’s offer.

Oliver The Robot

Oliver, our site maintaining robot, continues to have issues with his emotion chip. We have worked him so hard that the thing has seemingly burned out completely. While it was at first helpful to have Oliver acting as a cold, heartless automaton, it has since become a drag on our workflow. We are a lighthearted bunch, and having all of our jokes and pranks completely fail on Oliver has been bad for morale. He is putting more people to sleep when he talks than John Kerry.

We know the solution. A brand new emotion chip from Intel, called the emotiLINKCPU 3000: Protestant Work Ethic Edition. That new chip will make sure he happily works without complaint. The threat of the fiery depths of robot hell ensure that he will be happy to work endlessly.

It is expensive though. That is where you come in. If you think the article above is worth 1mBTC, we would love to have it. That is less than a quarter at today’s prices and it will get us the maintance care Oliver needs and help keep the influence free journalism coming. 1. It's a damn shame that there are thousands of brilliant students of all races, including Muslims that work their asses off creating better and more advance technology then a clock in a pencil case. Technology that can change the world. Yearly these amazing students have to compete against each other and be put on a chop block for a chance to earn a scholarship for way less money and in hopes to be notice by schools like MIT. Where's the fairness in that? Every single person, no matter the color of their skin, race, sexual orientation or religious belief have been wrongly profiled at least one point in their lives, some have even lost their lives or been tortured for an amount of time, where's their justice? Thou I'm against racism and I have friends of many different background and being a brown skin Latina myself I can't help but to feel sadden in watching how white Americans are basically being forced to feel ashamed of being white, we need to remember that not every white skin person is a racist and they shouldn't have to feel that they need to apologize for events that happened before all our times and for having no control over. Those who demand those apologies are the true racists. Am I a racist for saying this? No. Am I a bigot because of my opinions? Try again. The truth isn't meant to be polite its supposed to make you think. If the kid is such a "genius" then he should work for his scholarship like every other engineer student before and after him. He shouldn't get a free ride because a teacher was doing her job. This had nothing to do with his religion or race, he knew what he was doing, he knew exactly what that looked like, if he were any other religion or race and made a hoax bomb he would be handcuffed and taken in for questioning too, lets stop the hypocrisy America, the majority of the people are coming to his defense so they don't look like racist in the eyes of the world but its not working. Nobody should EVER have to apologize or be criticized for taking safety precautions, its ridiculous. Keep your money, let Ahmed earn his scholarship from his talents not because a Nation took pity on him, its not fair to all the other brilliant students that work endless hours trying to impress the world. #DamnShame

  2. Run a Google search on Ahmed didn't build that clock
You will learn that Ahmed simple pulled the guts out of an old Radio Shack clock and putnthemmin a metal case.
    Genius? innovative? Budding Muslim inventor?

If you pull the guts of your TV out of its plastic box and
Put it in a cardboard box could you say you built a TV?

  3. "When fourteen year old and aspiring engineer Ahmed Mohamed showed the digital clock he created…"

Taking apart an old digital clock, and putting it in a different case, is not considered inventing or clock making.

I bet this kid can't even explain the circuit theory on how a digital clock works.

  4. 9-11 Scam
    7-7 Scam
    Katrina Scam
    Barak Obama Scam
    Sandy Hook Scam
    Boston Bombing Scam
    Obola Scam
    Ahmed Scam.
All paid for with US tax dollars and private interests.
Thank you Sir may I have another?

  5. That idiot never made anything, he unscrewed four screws and threw the inner workings of a clock in a pencil case to scare his teacher. His father ran for President of Sudan and was a lawyer against the Quoran book burning in Florida last year. It's a hoax just like the balloon kid. I've seen, in person, and on the internet boys and girls of his age doing way more in the field of electronics that his kid will ever do.

  6. the bitcoin foundation is probably thinking up a false flag attack against bitcoin as we speak. The whole organization from the top down are card carrying Freemasons.

  7. He didn't "create a digital clock" – he took one apart, put it in a briefcase, & then when the cops asked him what it was he wouldn't say. Gee, can you say set up? Give me a break. Over 90% who saw the picture of the briefcase clock & didn't know the details said it looked like a bomb. Didn't the FBI just say to us "see something, say something"? My kid can take apart a clock too – shouldn't she get $250,000 or is Mr. Fenton going to discriminate against my child because she's not the "correct" religion or race? This was so totally obviously a set up by the dad it's ridiculous – the guy's daughter had tried something similar a few years earlier. And you idiots fell for it hook line & sinker – got to love liberals!
