Fans can now purchase tokens to vote on certain issues, such as the new mural for the team’s locker room

One of the world’s largest football clubs, FC Barcelona, has launched a bespoke fan token for completing surveys. The project was developed and released in collaboration with its partner Chiliz, who arranged a flash sale on the socios.com platform for 48 hours where the tokens were being sold for €2 each.

The flash sale began at 1 pm CST on June 22.

When the 48 hours expire, or when 600,000 tokens are purchased, the Spanish champions’ $BAR token will be valued on a supply and demand basis.

The tokens will be used to answer surveys and cast votes. The first survey will allow supporters to choose a design for a new mural to decorate the first-team changing room.

CEO and founder of Socios.com and Chiliz, Alexandre Dreyfus, believes that blockchain technology is key to allowing sports personalities to engage with their fans.

“Fan engagement has never been more important for the sports industry, and just as football is resuming, albeit, without fans in the stadium, we are launching FC Barcelona’s Fan Token and are helping to boost their ability to connect the Club with their fans all over the world,” Dreyfus explained.

After purchasing the token, fans can immediately use their $BAR to vote on the first club poll.

“With FC Barcelona’s huge global fanbase, we expect this to be our biggest and best FTO, far surpassing the volume of tokens sold by our other partners.”

Other football clubs have also invested in the use of blockchain technology. West Ham United, a Premier League football club, is developing a blockchain-based platform that will give fans the opportunity to vote on so-called “soft decisions.” This project is in partnership with socios.com as well.

With regards to the idea of a “soft decision,” fans will be allowed to vote different things, such as which player should be awarded Man of the Match and which TV camera should be used in the pre-match build-up.

The right to vote can be acquired using the cryptocurrency tokens.

“We haven’t yet agreed on a price for each West Ham United fan token, but like with our other club partners, the price point will be low (under £10) so as to be affordable and accessible to all fans – and so fans can buy more than one if they choose. Fans can also earn or hunt for fan tokens for free.” Dreyfus said.
