Open Source Money follows the story of ICO Dragonchain and its struggles with US regulators
Open Source Money is a new docuseries focusing on cryptocurrencies that recently aired on July 4, premiering on the Discovery Science channel and the television provider Philo.
“Overall humanity is at a crossroads and the future of money as we know it will be transformed by Blockchain and the new internet of Value. The only question is, where will the US stand in the Space Race of our generation when the dust settles?” the docuseries website asks.
This new series provides an in-depth analysis of what the cryptocurrency ecosystem is and how it works. Each episode shows discussions with a number of experts in the cryptocurrency industry and other luminaries, such as Charles Hoskinson and Brock Pierce.
The docuseries centers around the journey of an initial coin offering (ICO) named Dragonchain (DRGN) and the way the project’s developers had to work with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to have their work licensed.
The original developers behind the Dragonchain was the Seattle branch of the Walt Disney Company in 2014. However, the company and the project chose to go separate ways in 2016. This new series was produced by the Vision Tree firm and the company managed to raise $1 million in funding through a variety of cryptocurrencies to drive the filming process.
The episodes highlight Dragonchain’s challenges with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) when US regulators decided that the project was an unlicensed security. Special appearances within the docuseries also include Perianne Boring, the founder of the Chamber of Digital Commerce, Alex Mashinsky from the Celsius Network and the infamous John McAfee.
In addition, reports have mentioned the appearance of Patrick Byrne in one of the five parts that have been filmed for the series. While the filmmakers do focus on the creation of Dragonchain, the episodes are a valuable insight into the cryptocurrency industry as a whole.
“Each episode highlights major contributors in the cryptocurrency revolution, including notable figures Patrick Byrne, Brock Pierce, Joe Roets, and companies the likes of Disney, Facebook, and more,” the Open Source Money website explains.
The website also hints at a 500,000 DRGN giveaway, which can be accessed by viewers if they piece together clues from each episode every week.
The theme of the show also covers the US’ current regulatory attitude toward cryptocurrencies.
Open Source Money airs on Discovery Science and Philo at 10 AM ET every Saturday until the finale.
